Moving up from the Early Years to the Junior School
Moving Confidently into Year 1
At St Chris, the transition from Early Years into Year 1 is a natural and well-supported step.
Because Nursery and Reception are part of the Junior School from the beginning, pupils already feel familiar with routines, staff and the wider environment. By the time they move into Year 1, school feels like a place they know and belong.
This continuity helps pupils approach the next stage of learning with confidence and independence.
Familiar People Familiar Places
Because Early Years sits within the Junior School, pupils spend time getting to know:
- teaching staff beyond their classroom
- specialist teachers
- shared learning spaces
- routines across the school day
- expectations for learning and behaviour
This familiarity makes the move into Year 1 feel like a continuation rather than a change.
Learning Independence Step by Step
Reception pupils are gradually supported to take increasing responsibility for their learning as the year progresses.
They become confident in:
- organising their belongings
- following classroom routines
- working independently and in groups
- listening carefully and contributing ideas
- approaching new challenges positively
These skills help ensure pupils feel secure as expectations grow in Year 1.
Working Closely with Families
Transition is strongest when school and home work together.
Families receive regular updates on progress during Reception, along with opportunities to talk with staff about readiness for Year 1. As pupils prepare to move on, teachers ensure that each child’s strengths, interests and next steps are clearly understood by the Year 1 team.
This continuity supports both academic progress and emotional confidence.
During the Reception year, we hold a parent information session to explain the transition process and what to expect as children move into Year 1 and beyond.
Following the information session, parents are invited to tour the Junior School. This provides a refresher on our facilities and an opportunity to ask questions, ensuring families feel informed and confident about the next stage of their child’s learning.
Junior School Transition Day
Building on visits throughout the year, during the summer term, Reception students take part in the Junior School Transition Day. It’s a chance to make new friendships, explore the next stage of learning, and ease any nerves about starting the Junior School.
Each student’s key worker shares detailed information with the Reception team, ensuring that every child’s unique journey so far is understood and celebrated. This handover allows the Reception team to support a seamless transition, helping children feel comfortable, valued, and confident as they begin the next chapter of their St Chris journey.
Ready for What Comes Next
By the end of Early Years, pupils leave Reception as confident members of the Junior School community. They are ready to take the next step in their learning with curiosity, resilience and a strong sense of belonging — foundations that continue to shape their experience throughout their time at St Chris.
